Photo Sharing Websites

Photography is one of the most popular passtimes and most of us have cameras in our phones or small, yet powerful digital cameras that allow us to create photographs that can be printed out in superb quality. You can of course have your own photo printer that allows you to print quality images at your convenience and relatively cheaply. For large photos of A2 or A3 you will need to spend a fair bit to buy a printer to do this, or if you just want one or two photographs printed in this size then using a photo printing service will probably be the cheaper option.

Another way to use photographs is of course to put them online so you can share them with a few fiends or by making your pictures public so that anyone can view and often print them. You still retain copyright of your images although many people choose to allow others to use and share their pictures under a Creative Commons licence. So you want to put your pictures online, well there is a number of choices for you to consider.

Blogging

Most blogging sites such as Blogger (A Google site) allows you to upload your pictures to your blog so that you can write about your photographs as well as do other things - such as following your favourite blogs and adding Google Adsense to your blogs so that you can earn money from your blog. Blogger connects to your Google account so you can get free e-mail as well as online galleries and use Buzz to make connections with your friends.

Other free blogs include WordPress.com and Microsoft Live where you can get 25GB of online storage for free for pictures and documents.

Of course you may want to have more control over your blog and also want your own domain name for your photo gallery. When you buy a domain name and web space you will often find that your web host will provide you with a number of easy to install scripts to set up a wide range of online software including your own online copy of WordPress blogging platform as well as other popular options.

Photo Sharing Websites

Then there is photo sharing websites that are dedicated to allowing you to store your photos online, one of the most popular is Flickr and if your photographs are good enough then you may also be able to licence them for re-sale through Flickr. Many other photo sharing websites exist and are often connected to a Photo Printing Service, a convienent way of storing your pictures as well as having them printed in a wide range of formats including onto mugs and other gifts. PhotoBucket is another photo sharing site that is used by many people.

If you are a photographer or anyone with a camera that takes pictures that other people like then you can sell them online with many of the photo sharing websites. You can learn more about having your own pictures for sale with PhotoBox.

More Photo Sharing and Gallery Websites

Photo Gallery software includes Coppermine and Gallery. I have used Coppermine on websites and find it very good. Unfortunately so do spammers and while there is a way to put in spam filtering it involves a bit of knowledge that may be beyond many of us who just want to get on with the job of putting pictures up on a website. I used to have examples running on this site of Coppermine and Gallery Photo Galleries however I decided to move my sites to a new server with 1and1 and did not move the galleries. I may add them again in the future if I can figure out how to stop the spammers!

Below are a jumbled list of websites I have found that offer photo sharing, printing and other services for the amateur and professional photographer.
